My work on the website of my department (the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication) has taken many forms, none of which are much related directly to design. I designed and built a web-publishing system based on Microsoft Word's Visual Basic scripting language, and allowed all editorial work to be done using Word thus eliminating the need for manual editing of HTML files, which few staff were able to do. It also allowed the use of the greater editing power of Word, as well as automatic entity substitution for a much higher degree of typographic sophistication.
I also worked on implementing and tweaking the site's design, using HTML, CSS and Javascript. A solution to the problem of being unable to bookmark individual pages in a frame-based site was evolved using Javascript to dynamically rebuild the frameset around content pages, as well as allowing the content pages to ensure that they always had the correct navigation elements loaded in the navigation frame.
